8-Days Lemosho Routes

8 Days Lemosho Route is a scenic and gradual Kilimanjaro adventure designed for acclimatization, breathtaking landscapes, and a rewarding summit experience at Uhuru Peak. From the lush rainforest and Shira Plateau to Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, this route offers an unforgettable journey with eight days to climb, acclimatize, and explore.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration and park formalities, then continue to the Lemosho trailhead. The trek begins through lush montane rainforest toward Mti Mkubwa, meaning “Big Tree.” This is intentionally a relatively gentle opening day.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

The forest gradually gives way to heather and moorland as you climb toward the Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes more open, with increasingly dramatic views of Kibo and the surrounding mountain slopes.

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

A scenic traverse across the Shira Plateau. This is a valuable acclimatization day because the walking distance is moderate while you spend more time at altitude. Depending on the operational variation, some 8-day itineraries use Moir Hut instead; the Shira 2 version is a common classic arrangement.

Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

This is one of the most important acclimatization days. You climb toward Lava Tower at about 4,600m, then descend to Barranco Camp around 3,900m. The classic “climb high, sleep lower” profile helps prepare the body for the summit. The descent also brings you into the spectacular Barranco landscape.

Day 5: Barranco to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks intimidating from below, it is primarily a scrambling and hiking section rather than technical rock climbing. After crossing the wall, continue through the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp.

Day 6: Karanga to Barafu Camp

A relatively short but important climb toward Barafu Camp at roughly 4,640–4,673m. After reaching camp, rest, hydrate and prepare your summit equipment. The early arrival is deliberate because the summit attempt normally starts around midnight.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

The summit day begins around midnight. You climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating the summit and taking in sunrise over the roof of Africa, descend toward Mweka Camp for the night. This is the longest and most physically demanding day.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Your final morning begins with breakfast before descending through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After completing park exit formalities and receiving your summit certificate, your vehicle transfers you back to Moshi or Arusha.
