7 Days Machame Route overview
The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey” route, is renowned for its scenic beauty and challenging ascent. Over seven days, this route offers diverse landscapes, including rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. It is a popular choice for climbers seeking a more immersive and rewarding Kilimanjaro experience. The route includes acclimatization days to help ensure a successful summit attempt.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Relax, enjoy a welcome dinner, and prepare for the upcoming adventure.
Day 2: Moshi to Machame Gate, Start Machame Trek
After breakfast, travel to the Machame Gate to begin your trek. The trail starts through lush rainforest, offering a gradual ascent. Enjoy a packed lunch along the way. Reach the Machame Camp in the evening, where you will have dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Depart from Machame Camp and hike through moorland terrain towards Shira Camp. As you ascend, the landscape transitions to more open terrain with stunning views. Arrive at Shira Camp, set up your tent, have dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower, then to Barranco Camp
Hike from Shira Camp to Lava Tower for acclimatization. The climb to the tower offers magnificent views and a chance to experience high altitude. Afterward, descend to Barranco Camp for the night. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day with a challenging ascent up the Barranco Wall, followed by a trek through the Karanga Valley to reach Karanga Camp. This section provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains and is crucial for acclimatization. Settle in at Karanga Camp with dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Continue your trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, which is the base camp for your final summit attempt. The hike takes you through alpine desert terrain. Once at Barafu Camp, have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit bid.
Day 7: Summit Attempt and Descend to Mweka Camp
Continue your trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, which is the base camp for your final summit attempt. The hike takes you through alpine desert terrain. Once at Barafu Camp, have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit bid.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Departure
Complete your descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement. Transfer back to Arusha for relaxation or head to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
